In a world of rising geopolitical tensions, economic relations between states are becoming an arena of conflict. Recent crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, have demonstrated the risks of high economic dependence on third countries in strategic sectors. This dependence makes states vulnerable to economic statecraft, which is the use of economic instruments to attain foreign policy goals. In the first part of this RMA webinar, we explore different aspects of economic statecraft and provide a framework to identify vulnerabilities and analyse influencing attempts. In the second part, we examine recent case studies and show the added-value for policy making.
