Open source intelligence (OSINT) is a valuable tool for military information gathering and decision-making. It can be used to uncover actionable insights, verify secret information, and provide near-real-time information. As seen in the recent Russian-Ukraine conflict, OSINT was used to track military movements and operations, potentially helping to clear the fog of war.
A sub-discipline of OSINT, social media intelligence (SOCMINT or SMI), has seen increased use by the military for intelligence gathering, influence operations, military deception, public affairs, and other information operations. Many organizations and state actors have been identified as using social media for information operations.
However, with the large volume of data available, manual analysis is not feasible. This presentation will explore how tools and techniques such as network science, natural language processing, and computer vision can be leveraged to analyze large volumes of social media data, assisting analysts in their tasks.
